BALANCING CREATIVE SUCCESS WITH REAL LIFE

I’m Amy Weiher, author of “Good Work! Practical Advice for Starting & Scaling Your Creative Freelance Business.” For 20+ years, I’ve run my own successful design studio while balancing life as a mom, wife, pet owner, and PTA President. I truly understand the challenge of building a creative career alongside life’s many other important roles.

“Good Work!” is the guide I needed when i started freelancing. This book offers practical advice on everything from financial management and client attraction to delivering quality work and sustainable growth. It also addresses the real challenges of setting schedules, hiring help, creating boundaries, and self-care amid the hustle—issues I continue to navigate daily.

My mission is straightforward: to help you combine creative passion with essential business skills so you can build your dream company faster and more confidently than I did. I want to share insights that would have saved me countless headaches, especially when trying to balance it all. Consider “Good Work!” your companion for navigating the exciting, sometimes overwhelming entrepreneurial journey, with the reassurance that you’re not alone in this balancing act.

WHY DID I WRITE THIS BOOK?

The idea for this book emerged during the summer of 2020, when I watched friends suddenly pivot to freelancing. As they reached out with questions about finding clients and navigating self-employment, I realized my hard-earned lessons could help others. Hearing the same questions repeatedly at virtual freelancing conferences confirmed this need. More importantly, I recognized that many of us are trying to succeed professionally while juggling family obligations, volunteer commitments, and the ongoing search for balance.

Whether you’re considering freelancing, starting a side hustle, weathering those challenging early days, or scaling an established business—all while managing family, volunteering, or other passions—this book is for you.

How is Good Work! different from other business books?

You don’t need 80-hour weeks to succeed.

You don’t need to say yes to every project.

You don’t need to sacrifice everything to “make it.”

Hustle culture lied to you. Doing good work—work that matters, work that makes an impact—doesn’t have to come at the cost of your wellbeing.

This book shows you how—from 20 years of real experience (horror stories included). Written specifically for designers, illustrators, photographers, writers, developers, and other creative professionals, this isn’t theory from someone who’s never done the work. Every page is packed with actionable guidance from someone who’s navigated the same challenges you’re facing, enriched with real stories from diverse creative entrepreneurs who’ve built businesses on their own terms.
